Hong Kong is one of the most advanced insurance markets in the world.
Thanks to its unique position, it has a legacy of western-standard
financial and legal infrastructure left over from the British, and
access to the vast Chinese markets.
It has therefore become a favourite base for international financial
companies looking to advance into Greater China, and insurance companies
have been no exception.
In a CLSA conference survey taken in 2010, not did attendees
overwhelming believe that Hong Kong was the main financial market in
Asia, trumping rivals such as Singapore and Shanghai.
31% of attendees also felt that Hong Kong would be the main financial
center in the world, taking over from New York and London.
Whether or not that happens, by 2020 most analysts believe that China will represent the world's largest insurance market.
Hong Kong therefore represents a triple play.
There is a small but advanced local market.
There is an infrastructure to support Asian operations.
And there is direct access to the Chinese market.
Expect the Hong Kong Insurance Industry to grow and grow.
